Tucked in the wine country of northern Santa Barbara is a little town called Los Olivos. This little Victorian town, with a population of around 1,000 is chocked full of tourist treasures such as art galleries, antique stores, fine dining and of course wineries. In fact, Los Olivos boasts the highest number of wineries per square mile in the entire country all made possible via the Los Olivos Promenade. The Promenade is composed of a main street through town along with a couple side streets and it is literally sprinkled with winery tasting rooms only a stone’s throw away from each other. There is not really a more convenient way to go wine tasting and touring than to visit this wine Mecca.
Los Olivos was established around 1880 on a bluff that overlooked Alamo Pintado Creek just north of the small town of Ballard. The homesteader that first laid down his roots (so to speak) did so with the initial purchase of 157 acres in 1885. It was here that he planted 5,000 olive trees and thus the name Rancho de Los Olivos, which translates to Ranch of the Olives, was born.
While just a blip on the map, this little town with its scenic views and varying landscape attracts big attention. In addition to being the home of numerous celebrities such as Bo Derek, Cheryl Ladd, Steven Seagal and former President Ronal Reagan, the area got it’s big break from the wine movie called “Sideways”. This movie which literally changed the countries perception of wine by way of slamming Merlot and praising Pinot Noir featured a number of local tasting rooms and wineries, specifically Fess Parker’s winery.
While the buzz about the movie and the stars has definitely quieted down, the place has not changed and thus is still ideal for your Santa Barbara wine tour. With so many interesting little wineries to explore, a service such as the Wine Line makes it incredible convenient for you to go wine tasting at your own pace. You’ll get to choose which wineries you want to go to and how long you want to stay. Regardless of how you go wine tasting in beautiful Los Olivos one thing is for sure, you will not be disappointed.
